This Government Law College Ernakulam is the first Law College in Kerala founded in 1874 in the midst of the Metropolitan city Kochi. The law classes continued in the same manner until 1894 when the institution was completely reorganized on a new footing. The college was given the position of an independent college with the name of His Highness the Maharajah's Law College, Thiruvananthapuram with W.T.A. The story of the Government Law College, Ernakulam[3is as old as 1874, when legal education took its foundation in Kerala through the Maharajah of Travancore in his approval of an Organisation of a Law Class as part of His Highness's college Thiruvananthapuram (present University College Trivandrum). This was done in order to allow students from Travancore to take the law exam of Madras University. These law classes continued to run in this manner until 1894, after which the institution was organized entirely on a completely different basis.
The college was elevated to the status of an independent institution under the name His Highness the Maharajah's Law College, Thiruvananthapuram with W.T.A. Cosby Bar-at-law (judge for the High Court in Travancore in 1892) appointed Professor of Law in the year 1892) to be the initial principal. A set of regulations was developed by the government to ensure the regulation and control of the work at the college. The rules outlined the qualifications that were required of faculty members. The college was managed by His Highness the Maharajah Travancore at the beginning and continued to be managed until 1909 when the college came under the direction of Public Instruction.
In 1910, the school was brought under the control of the High Court in Travancore. In the wake of the founding of Travancore University, in the year 1938, the college was moved under the supervision of the University. In 1957, the Kerala University was formed and the college became part of its control. In 1983, following the creation of Mahatma Gandhi University at Kottayam, The college was incorporated as an integral college of the university. It is now part of it.
