It was established in 1956 and is one of the premier medical institutions in the state of Maharashtra. Currently, the college admits 200 students per year for undergraduate MBBS and about 120 students per year for various postgraduate courses. The college has an excellent training center for junior doctors, nurses, and medical arts and science BSc and PG paramedics. In 1956, the College Library was founded together with the university.

There are three different departments such as clinical, paraclinical, and pre-clinical. All three departments have different specializations. The Government Medical College and Hospital has a total of 131 teaching staff in various disciplines.
Admission to Government Medical College and Hospital, Aurangabad is based on entrance examination. The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is common in India for admission to medical colleges. Admission to PG courses is done based on NEET PG score.

One year internship program is available for students of Government Medical College and Aurangabad Hospital. Students are offered clinical placements in various departments such as medicine, surgery, psychiatry, gynecology, etc. Students also receive a stipend during this internship period. After the internship period, students can continue their service in a government hospital or they can also opt for private hospitals.
Government Medical College and Aurangabad Hospital do not offer scholarships to students to study in the college. However, students can apply for the Maharashtra State Government scholarship up to about half of the tuition fee based on the community the students belong to.
