Government Medical College, Kottayam Kerala was established in the year 1961 as Government Educational Institute to provide higher education to build a career in the field of Medical. Government Medical College is approved by the reputed MCI, and is affiliated with KUHS, Thrissur. Management of Government Medical College, Kottayam is working under Dr. Remla Beevi (Principal).
The Third Medical College in Kerala, Government Medical College Kottayam was established in 1962. It was formally inaugurated on 03.12.1962 by Sri. R Sankar, the then Chief Minister of Kerala in the presence of Sri.M P Govindan Nair, the Health Minister. It has a campus that spreads across 265 acres of beautiful land shared by two panchayats (Arpookkara and Athirampuzha) and Kottayam municipality. This is a tertiary care hospital catering to people from five districts including Kottayam, Idukki, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, and Ernakulam. This is the referral hospital for lakhs of pilgrims visiting Sabarimala temple. The world-renowned tourism spot Kumarakom is just 14 kilometers away. Government Medical College Kottayam is a 2094 bedded hospital that has about 3000 outpatients and more than 500 emergency patient visits per day. The number of in-patients being treated in this hospital is more than one lakh annually. There are 327 regular teaching faculty and more than 1550 other staff working in this institution. The annual intake for medical undergraduate courses is 175 and that for post-graduation is 142. The total annual intake for pharmacy and other paramedical courses is 196.
Government Medical College is approved by the Medical Council of India (MCI) and accredited by Mahatma Gandhi University.

The college provides separate hostel facilities for both girls and boys with all the necessary facilities.

The institute has an affiliated Government Medical College Hospital where students can gain hands-on experience.
Faculty
The institute has a well-trained faculty team that takes up the responsibility of educating and training its students to become skilled professionals. Most of the teaching facilities are for doctors and/or Ph.D. holders. A lot of the teachers also have experience working in hospitals. The faculty also attends seminars, conferences, and workshops to improve their skill set and have also contributed to their fields of interest.
Scholarship
The institute offers scholarships for students belonging to SC/ST categories. They also have an APJ Abdul Kalam scholarship for academically excellent students. Other than these, students can also avail of Central/State Government scholarships provided their annual income is below INR 1 Lakh.
Placements
The college offers a 1-year internship to all its students for which the stipend is currently INR 25000. The college does not provide placements, but job opportunities in the health sector are vast and students can get great jobs based on their skill-set in various departments.
Admission
Admission to any course is based on marks obtained in the NEET or AIPMT entrance exams. 15% of the seats are all-India quota seats and 85% are reserved for State-Quota.
