Govt. Women's Polytechnic College, Kozhikode, situated in the Calicut Corporation limits was started in the year 1962-1963 with a view to creating ample chances for educated women to undergo technician training and hence to increase the pool of employed Women Technicians.  In the beginning, there were 2-year diploma courses in Civil Engineering, Commercial Practice, and Costume Design & Dress Making. Later the programs were realigned as Diploma In Commercial Practice (3 years) and Civil Engineering Course was discontinued. In the year 1983, A new diploma course on Power Electronics (3 years) was started. Later the Power Electronics course was restructured as Diploma in Electronics.
