Some 62 years ago, the then Chief Minister S. Partap Singh Kairon, with an aim to give not only Punjab but the nation a prominent place in the field of sports, laid the foundation of the State College of Sports in 1961. It was the first sports college in Asia and made Punjab renowned worldwide in the field of sports.

Art departments were introduced in the college in 1977 and therefore the college was renamed "National College of Arts and Sports". Later it was converted into a coeducational institution in 2005-2006.
