About 62 years ago, then Prime Minister S. Partap Singh Kairon laid the foundation of the National Sports College in 1961 with the aim of giving not only Punjab but also the nation a prominent place in the field of sports. the first sports college in Asia and made Punjab world famous in the field of sports. The famous Olympian Mr. Som Nath was the founder of the college. Later, many great personalities led the college to the pinnacle of sporting success. Art departments were introduced in the college in 1977 and therefore the college was renamed "National College of Arts and Sports". Later it was converted into a coeducational institution in 2005-2006.
