GSVM Medical College, Kanpur, known for its academic excellence the world over, is named after the Late Shri Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi, a great freedom fighter, who lost his life at the altar of the communal frenzy in Kanpur in March 1931. This was the first medical college of U.P. established in independent India, forming a landmark in the annals of medical education in the state of U.P. It is one of the five medical colleges in India established under the second five-year plan.

This college came into existence in November 1955 and its foundation stone was laid down by Hon’ble Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India, on April 24, 1956. Late Dr. S.N. Mathur was the first Principal of this college.

GSVM Medical College, Kanpur is Affiliated with Chatrapati Sahuji Maharaj Kanpur University and is approved by the Medical Council of India (MCI).

Hostel

The college provides well-furnished hostel accommodation to its students. The hostels have double and triple-seated rooms. Each hostel complex has its separate mess with a well-equipped kitchen and dining area providing hygienic, nutritious, and wholesome meals. Hostels have a gymnasium as well as indoor and outdoor sports facilities. The hostels also have a TV room and library with magazines and fiction / general reading books. Hostels are equipped with eco-friendly solar water heating systems. Hostels also have canteens and provision stores for minor items of the daily requirement. Scholarship

The College provides National Scholarships, SC/ST and OBC Scholarships, Fee Concession, and help from the Students Welfare Fund. In all 1205 students got Scholarships amounting to Rs. 2852185.00. 80 students were given fee concession and 25 got aid from the Students Welfare Fund amounting to Rs. 13050.00.
