The institute started in 1860 and was known as Gujarat Provincial College to teach subjects of Mathematics, Philosophy, Fine-arts, and Law in association with the Govt. High School. The college restarted in 1879 managed by the Gujarat College Committee, functioning under the leadership of Sheth Ranchhodlal Chhotalal as Hon. Secretary. From 1884 to 1887, Government took over the administration of the college by appointing district staff. The management was handed over to Society for Promotion of Higher Education in Gujarat in 1887 and was again taken over by the State Government in 1912.

Infrastructure and Facilities

Library:

Sir Chinubhai Madhavalal Baronet, ICE. donated Rs. 1,50,000 for King-Emperor George V Hall and Lord Geroge Sydenham Clarke Library together in 1897. The library was inaugurated by the then Governor Sir Sydenham (Lord Sydenham, Later) in 1915. The New Library Building was constructed in 1955. The library claims to possess the richest (More than 80,000 books) collection of the world’s best publications of academic importance comprising a treasure of more than 30,000 rare books. We are constantly in the process of increasing our collection of books further. Sydenham Library has also started subscribing to research journals in electronic as well as printed formats. The library has provided E-Resources through NLIST, INFLIBNET Centre. The library is fully automated with SOUL software. The software facilitates issue-return of books, a web-based catalog to access the books (OPAC), and reservation of books. The bar-coding system is used to computerize the bibliographic details of the books. The web-based inquiry module of software has been installed so the resource collection can be viewed from outside the campus.

Hostel Facilities:

Established in 1860, Gujarat College is one of the oldest institutions in the state of Gujarat. Located in the heart of the city, Ahmedabad, with a sprawling campus and Victorian architectural buildings, its Arts and Science faculties closely knit the college. Its reputation for outstanding achievements is known worldwide and it reflects the intellectual achievements of the students. Hostel blocks B (1908), D (1912), and block A (1916) were constructed from donations by Sir Chiubhai Baronet. A new dining hall for students in the hostel was made in 1982. The hostel blocks (rooms) are A (30), B(16), C (28), and D (20) which together can accommodate 188 students. Presently, Shri S. V. Bilgi and Prof. B.G. Patel, manage the hostel administration as rector. Adjoining Government Ladies Hostel is chaired by the Principal, of Gujarat Arts and Science College and provides accommodation to girl students.
