Haldia is a famous river-port town situated on the banks of the Hooghly River. It is an expanding industrial belt in eastern India. The Department of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal, realizing the educational needs of this rapidly growing town and its adjoining areas, decided to establish the second government college in the erstwhile district of Medinipur in 1988. As a result, Haldia Government College was instituted. Under the affiliation of Vidyasagar University, the college came into being in 1988 and was inaugurated by the former Chief Minister of West Bengal, Shri Jyoti Basu, on 20th November.

Haldia Government College offers Degree Courses in B. A General, Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) General, B.Sc (Hons) Chemistry, Anthropology, Economics, Geography, Statistics, Mathematics, and Physics, B.A (Hons)-Bengali, English, Education, and Sociology, Master of Science (M.Sc.) Geography, Chemistry, Tourism & Travel Management Vocational Course.

Infrastructure and facilities:

Gymnasium: 

The college has a big multi-gymnasium which comes under the department of physical education accessible by every student. 

Playground:

Haldia government college has two playgrounds on its campus. One playground has a volleyball court while the other one has a badminton court. 

Library: 

Haldia government college has a big central library where one can find more than 40000 collections of different textbooks, reference books, and journals. Apart from this central library, each department has its seminar library too. 

Canteen: 

There is a canteen which provides many items of food for reasonable prices.

Hostel: 

The college has two hostels, one for boys and one for girls. Each hostel can accommodate around 100 students. While allocating the hostels, the distance from the student’s residence to the hostels is taken into consideration.

Admissions:

Admissions to all courses are based on the merit received in the previous qualifying examination. An admission test is conducted for 40% of seats in the Postgraduate course. Candidates need to be eligible to apply.

Tuition Fee waiver scheme:

Aid Fund, Kanyashree Prakalpa: This scholarship is offered by the state government only to female students. This Scholarship has been divided into two parts. One category provides INR 250, while the second provides INR 25000.Minority Scholarship: This scholarship is provided to those students only who belong to a minority community and is provided by the West Bengal minority development finance corporation (WBMDFC), Sitaram Jindal Scholarships.
