One of the veritable nerve centres of women’s education in north-eastern India, Handique Girls’ College was established in 1939, a dream come true for the late Mrs Rajabala Das, a pioneer in the field of women’s education. The patronage and philanthropy of the late Radha Kanta Handique were also largely responsible for giving shape to the first institution for higher education for women, in the undivided state of Assam. Mrs Rajabala Das also became the founder and principal of the college. Imbued with the fervour of the nationalist struggle for freedom, Mrs Das was intent on doing away with unjustified taboos and prejudices on the societal, familial and individual levels, pertaining to the womenfolk of Assam. Education appeared to her to be the only weapon to enable a woman to reveal her own identity and to partake in active public life.

Facilities and Infrastructure

Handique Girls’ College has a modern computerized college library is an invaluable aid to the young scholar. The college has a state of art library building spreading across two floors with a 458 sq. mt. area. The library is named Rajabala Das Library in honour of the founder and Principal of the College. The library has an impressive collection of books, journals, newspapers and magazines, e-resources like CDs/DVDs, e-journals, e-books, bibliographic databases, etc. The library with its open access system and spacious reading area provides an atmosphere conducive to the excitement of mental discovery. Students are encouraged to become sagacious users of the library which is a welcome haven for intellectual pursuits. Moreover, each department of the College has an individual library called the departmental library, which provides additional help to students and teachers in their academic pursuits. The library also provides access to e-resources to the teachers and students of the College through the UGC-INFLIBNET N-List programme. The library remains open from 10 A.M. to 4 P.M. on all working days.

The College has an air-conditioned Central Computer Centre with 32 sets of high-end desktop computers and a high-speed 50 Mbps broadband line provided by AMTRON under the ASWAN Project. Both students and faculty members use this facility to access the internet, download materials, scan and take print-outs of the materials of their interest and do other computer-based tasks. The facility is also used by the faculty for computer literacy programs and for imparting computer-related activities. The Computer Centre is also used for conducting classes for the students of B.Sc & M.Sc. Zoology & Botany students.

The college has taken the initiative to establish a fitness centre (Gym) on the college premises in the year 2010 with some modern and sophisticated equipment. Students use the facilities in the centre every day after class hours. A physical instructor is also appointed to instruct the students. Students perform their exercises in groups of 15-20 every day.

The Department of Philosophy, Handique Girls’ College has been organizing a “Yoga and Meditation” course in collaboration with Vivekananda Kendra, Guwahati on the college campus, outside the class hours for more than twenty hours. This course is an attempt to present a critical exposition of Yoga as a Philosophy and its importance in present-day society. The lectures connected to the course have been trying to present a systematic account of “Yoga” with a study of the basic concepts of “Yoga in Philosophy” in light of the development of some schools of Indian Philosophy.

The college canteen serves both vegetarian and non-vegetarian items. The canteen does not disappoint in terms of diversity or quality of food. The students can relish detectable food at times. It caters for the canteen requirements on the college campus. The canteen is also provided with UV treated filtered drinking water setup along with water coolers. A similar safe drinking water facility also exists at yet another point on the ground floor of the college.
