The Faculty of Horticulture was established during the year 1971 with the formation of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. The PG and Doctoral Programmes were also introduced during the year of inception. The undergraduate program B.Sc. (Horticulture) was started during the year 1972 and later in 1990, the Programme was shifted to the Horticultural College and Research Institute, Periyakulam.

At the time of the formation of the University in 1971, the Departments of Fruit Crops, Flower Crops, and Spices and Plantation Crops were established. Later, the Department of Vegetable Crops and Department of Medicinal and Aromatic Crops were started in the years 1979 and 2010 respectively.
The college is affiliated with the university of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and is Approved by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.
The college courses are offered undergraduate programs (B.Tech).
Library:
The TNAU Library System comprises a University Library and 10 constitutional college libraries that collectively support the teaching, research, and extension programs of the University. The University Library houses a total collection of over Two lakh documents comprising books, theses, journals, and compact discs in the fields of Agricultural Science. All in-house operations in the library are fully computerized using the Koha software which provides web-based access to the online catalog of the Library. The benefit of consortia-based subscription to electronic resources is confined to its core members and also extended to all Constitutional Colleges, Research stations &KVKs through Remote access.
Computer Lab:
The Computer Center is well equipped with 200 Computer systems with Internet connectivity. This facility is well used by all the students for browsing the internet to search for information for their research and academic works.
Health Care Centre:
The TNAU dispensary has been functioning since June 20, 1974. The medical facilities are utilized by students, faculty, other staff members, farm workers, and their family members. The hospital functions with 3 Medical officers,1 Staff Nurse,2 Female Nursing Assistants, and 1 Pharmacist. Apart from treating common illnesses and chronic diseases, emergency care is provided when needed.
The University dispensary supports the health care activities of the students and staff members of the campus. The health center has four bedded facilities to treat patients for common health disorders with the required medical equipment for diagnosis and treatments.

Regular updating of the syllabus to make it dynamic, problem-solving, and creative in line with the changing scenario of resources. To make the institute a model for education and research in horticultural science.
To educate the students in their chosen field of specialization with respect to crop improvement, crop management, and post-harvest management in horticultural crops. To conduct contemporary research in crop improvement, crop management, and post-harvest management of horticultural crops to enhance income, and promote food and nutritional security with a multidisciplinary team approach to ensure the sustainable livelihood of farmers.
