The Department of Horticulture was established in 1971 with the founding of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. The UG and PG programs were also introduced in the founding year. The Bachelor of Science (Horticulture) program began in 1972 and transferred to the College of Horticulture and Research Institute, Periyakulam in 1990.
