IIIT Trichy is an autonomous university, established in 2016. The IIIT Trichy is one of 21 IIITs established by the MHRD under the non-profit Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Model. IIIT Trichy offers a variety of courses in Engineering, Science, and Information Technology at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels.

The IIIT Sports Centre is a multi-facility, multi-disciplinary sports complex aimed at developing well-rounded personalities of students. The Building has an Indoor stadium with two shuttle courts and a fitness center. IIIT Trichy students have access to all these facilities. The outdoor stadium has a 400M track. The cricket ground here hosts matches for the city league. The campus is dotted with two football grounds, one hockey field, two volleyball courts, two basketball courts, three tennis courts and two ball badminton courts. Besides each hostel has separate playgrounds and indoor games such as table tennis and carroms. IIIT Trichy students have access to all these facilities.

IIIT Admission Process:

IIIT Trichy offers Bachelor of Technology and PhD degree as of now. The admissions to B.Tech course degree are made on the basis of JEE MAIN entrance exam, along with JoSAA counselling. PhD admissions are made through merit and personal interview conducted by the institute itself. His areas of interest include sensor networks, numerical electromagnetics and antenna arrays. He is the recipient of Best Researcher Award of NIT Warangal for the year 2016. Six students received their Doctoral degrees under his guidance. About 90 papers are at his credit in International and National journals and Conferences. He visited USA, UK, Malaysia, and Mauritius to present his papers and on some assignments.

He was associated with many prestigious missile projects. He was also part of many training programs for working professionals in ECIL and DRDO. In addition, he coordinated one GIAN program. Under community service, he conducted several IT training programs for police personnel, surveying staff, and rural girls with TEQIP funds.

He initiated the annual technical event at NIT Warangal named TECHNOZION in 2005. He was prof-in-charge for halls of residence at their initial stage. He was also prof-in-charge for the Institute guest house. As Head of the Department, he presented the programmes of the department before NBA teams in both of his terms. He was the prime mover in accelerating research activity in the department. As Dean (Academic Affairs), he reformulated the rule

He is a member of academic councils of NIT-Andhra Pradesh and several private universities. He is a member of BoS of many autonomous colleges and universities. He is also a member of the selection committees of Defense Scientists. Presently, Dr. Sarma was appointed as the Founder Director of IIIT Tiruchirappalli.
