The Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), known as Pusa Institute, was started in 1905 at Pusa, Bihar. An American, Mr. Henry Phipps, gave a large grant of 30,000 pounds to start it. The institute was first called the Agricultural Research Institute (ARI). It had five departments: Agriculture, Cattle Breeding, Chemistry, Economic Botany, and Mycology. The Bacteriology unit was added in 1907. In 1911, the name changed to the Imperial Institute of Agricultural Research. Then, in 1919, it became the Imperial Agricultural Research Institute. In 1934, a big earthquake made the institute move to Delhi on July 29, 1936. After India's independence, the institute was renamed the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI).
