Public Administration really meant providing service to the people through the State apparatus using the ground rules of justice, ethics, and fair play. IIPA was the intention of the visionary Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru when he established the Indian Institute of Public Administration on March 29, 1954, based on the recommendations of a survey carried out in 1953 by Prof. Paul H. Appleby, Dean, Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University and a Consultant with the Ford Foundation invited to advise on the subject, by the Government of India.

IIPA, New Delhi was created under the Societies Act of 1860. The Institute was formally inaugurated by the first Prime Minister of India, as the first President of the Society, on March 29, 1954, in New Delhi. The Institute has been set up to equip public servants with domain knowledge, functional skills, and behavioral competencies required for managing the task of governance. Library:

IIPA has an excellent library. The library has a surplus of books related to social science. it has about 2 lakh books and periodicals there are 350 latest periodicals. The World Bank recently set up an information Kiosk in the library to facilitate easy online access.

Hostel:

IIPA has its own hostel. The hostel has a total of 67 rooms consisting of 38 Air-conditions & 29 Air-cooled rooms with the all other required facilities like telephone, TV, etc.

Computer lab:

The Institute has a well-equipped Computer Center. It is equipped with Pentium-based PCs, servers, & internet facilities.

Faculty:

The Institute has a distinguished permanent faculty, that has experience and expertise in all areas of administrative studies, political science, economics, administrative law, management, behavioral science, habitat and urban development, rural development, sociology, policy science, environment, and information technology. Faculty members of the Institute are avid authors, researchers, and trainers who keep themselves abreast of the changing requirements of administrative challenges.

Network & Collaboration:

With a membership of over 11,000 including about 100 overseas, the IIPA has a nationwide network of 24 regional branches and 43 local branches, which provide an exchange of ideas on current trends and practices in public administration to public servants, academics, and students.
