The institute was established in 1909 with active support from Jamsetji Tata and thus is also locally known as the "Tata Institute". It was granted the deemed to be university status in 1958 and the Institute of Eminence status in 2018.

Residences are separate for boys and girls. The Hostel provides facilities are guided strictly by the sense of comfort and quality of life for our students, In a room, of 2 inmates with an attached bathroom & the hostel provides a cot, a mattress, one set of bed sheets, and a pillow cover, a study table, a chair, and a cupboard for each Each hostel has a solar-heated water system, a common water cooler, a common TV room,
Health Centre:
The Health Centre at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore provides Health Care to the Institute Community comprising of Staff and Students. A large number of the staff members and their families are residents on the campus. Although small in relative terms, the health center is well equipped to undertake some clinical investigations and offers outpatient care as well as provides in-patient treatment.
Sports Facilities:
Gymkhana provides facilities for your all-round development. The university provided Indoor sports and outdoor sports.
Auditorium:
The Auditorium can accommodate 750 members. Further, there are 3 halls. Room A can accommodate 120 members, room B can accommodate 90 members, and room C 60 members.
