The Indian Cane Research Institute (IISR) in Lucknow was established in 1952 by the former Indian Central Sugar Cane Board to study the basic and applied aspects of sugar cane cultivation and to coordinate research on this crop in different states of the country. On January 1, 1954, the Indian government took over the institute from the Indian Central Committee for Sugar Cane.
