Indian Maritime University (IMU) was founded on November 14, 2008, as a teaching and affiliated university under the auspices of the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, with Chennai as its headquarters. It was created to promote maritime studies, training, research, and popularization with emphasis on emerging fields such as oceanography, maritime history, laws, maritime safety, search and rescue, transport of dangerous goods, environmental studies, and other related fields and to achieve excellence in these fields.

Indian Maritime University Chennai of courses are offered at various levels like Undergraduate Degree (i.e BBA, B.Tech, B.sc, etc.), Postgraduate Degree (i.e MBA, M.Tech, etc.) and Ph.D. and many more. Residential Accommodation
The hostel complex can accommodate 250 residents. Residents can do their physical training with outdoor/indoor games and a swimming pool. For routine health checks and emergencies, a medical center is available. There is also a guesthouse and staff accommodation on campus. Banking and communication services are provided to meet the needs of students.
Library
It has one of the best maritime libraries in the country with more than 8,000 books, maritime sector newspapers, and magazines to augment the academic studies of students/participants.
Indian Maritime University Chennai accepts admission through various entrance exams like IMU conducts a Common Entrance Test (IMU-CET).
The Marine division conducts pre-sea and post-sea training programmes for merchant navy personnel, working both on deck and engineering side. The programmes range from the entry level Pre-sea Cadets courses to Ship Masters level courses. These comprise of Modular and ISPS courses approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, competency courses, engineering courses and endorsement courses.
Consultancy assignments on all areas of port management, operation, engineering, finance and projects for major ports, non-major ports, private companies and other organizations including Ministries under the Government of India are undertaken. Besides, studies are undertaken on specific areas in maritime field.
