The Statistical Institute of India was founded by Prof. PC Mahalanobis in the 1960s when the city was just emerging as a center of learning. It is thanks to his foresight that the institute is now firmly anchored in one of the most dynamic research communities in Asia. Since the Statistical Quality Control Unit has been operating in Bangalore since 1956 and the Documentation Research and Training Center since 1962, Professor Mahalanobis considered establishing an ISI Center in the mid-1960s.
