Founded as an NGO in 1973, Jayaprakash Institute of Social Change was named after the well-known scholar, freedom fighter, and venerable social revolutionary the late Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan. In this endeavor, the late Prof. Sugata Dasgupta and the late Kshitish Roychowdhury, an ardent follower of Gandhian philosophy provided the necessary guidance for the growth and development of the organization.

The Jayaprakash Institute of Social Change (JPISC) was founded in 1973 (as the Institute of Social Change and Welfare) as a new school of study, research, and training dealing with the concept of development in theory and practice.  Since its inception, it has implemented multidimensional and diverse programs in urban and rural areas to bring about action-oriented change in micro-societies. The focus is on development as such, and in fulfilling this task the Institute seeks to shape its approach in such a way that the programs contribute to development. From the beginning, the institute has developed as a center of “social change”, with all its activities and intervention programs focused on the concept of initiating and catalyzing socio-economic changes in society as a whole and in its most sensitive part in particular.
