The previous name of the university used to be Malabar University. It was established in year 1996, under Act 22 of the 1996 Kerala legislature. The university provides a wealth of expertise regarding Science and Technology and other disciplines. It is comprised of seven campuses and a variety of faculties, and more than 33 schools, each with a different stream.

Kannur university offers a scholarship known as The scholarship is named Mrs. Sudha Krishnan endowment scholarship. The candidates should not achieve a score of less than 60% in the 12th class. Parents of students should be a fisherman and have an annual income less than 60000 rupees.
