Kannur University was established by the Act 22 of 1996 of Kerala Legislative Assembly. The University by the name “Malabar University” had come into existence earlier by the promulgation of an Ordinance by the Governor of Kerala, on 9th November 1995. The University was inaugurated on 2nd March 1996 by the then Chief Minister of Kerala, Sri. A.K Antony. The objective of the Kannur University Act 1996 is to establish in the Kerala state, a teaching, residential and affiliating University, promoting the development of higher education in Kasargod and Kannur revenue Districts and the Mananthavady Taluk of Wayanad District
The previous name of the university used to be Malabar University. It was established in year 1996, under Act 22 of the 1996 Kerala legislature. The university provides a wealth of expertise regarding Science and Technology and other disciplines. It is comprised of seven campuses and a variety of faculties, and more than 33 schools, each with a different stream.
The university has been certified with NAAC grade B. It is accredited under UGC, AIU, NCTE,ACU, AICTE & MCI.
Kannur University offers various UG and PG programs, including B.Tech, BBA, BCA, BSW, B.Com, B.Ed, MBA, M.Com, MCA, PhD etc.
Hermann Gundert Central Library Kannur University
There are about 53001 books in the library. Additionally there are 15 newspaper titles, 227 periodicals plus more than 1500 CD-ROMs journals, 22650 journals and more than 2 lakh eBooks at the library.
The library is a vital element of the research and education mission since it is equipped with all the essential facilities such as tables and chairs that have electric power, journal, newspapers etc.
It offers a variety of references and textbooks. Additionally, the college offers a well-equipped and well-established library for students to access diverse books and journals. Furthermore, it creates an environment that allows them to focus on their study.

Assistance with financial needs for those students who fall in the category of the 'Economically Weaker Section'. In the first place, students have to provide the required documents. After confirmation based on their family's income the annual cost is taken out of their income by a percentage. Students who are in the SC/ST category can enjoy the benefits of scholarship. NCC (National Cadet Corps) & NSS (National Service Scheme) Cells
The NCC department NCC is present in the college and students are involved in this program by fulfilling all requirements set by NCC. NCC department. Additionally the benefits of having the NCC certificate as a variety of government positions prefer holders of the certificate to be a part of the same.
Seminar and Conferences
Seminars, webinars, etc. are organized for students. Also, there are different activities, including extracurricular activities.

Kannur university offers a scholarship known as The scholarship is named Mrs. Sudha Krishnan endowment scholarship. This scholarship will help and support deserving, successful students who are from the less financially disadvantaged sections of UG 1st students who can apply for this scholarship in one of Kannur University affiliated colleges. The candidates should not achieve a score of less than 60% in the 12th class. Parents of students should be a fisherman and have an annual income less than 60000 rupees.
Students are also able to avail grants that are offered by Kerala government, known E-grants for students from families with low incomes to enable them to learn.
Kannur University follows CBCS at both the UG and PG levels. The university also has the Distance Education program, candidates are able to apply online for the course they prefer of courses.
