Kashmir Government Polytechnic came into existence in the year 1958 and was temporarily functioning in the barracks of Naseem Bagh, Kashmir University campus, initially training in three disciplines viz. Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering. In the year 1962, the institute was shifted to the present campus at Gogjibagh. The institute was temporarily closed in the year 1969-70 due to some reasons and was later revived in the year 1972. The discipline of automobile engineering was added to the revival of the institute. In the year 1986, Electronics & Communication and two Post Diploma courses viz, Post Diploma in Rural Technology & Management and Post Diploma in Computer Science were also introduced. The institute is spread over an area of 14.875 acres of land.

The number of books is nearly 50,000, of which 70% are books related to the engineering and technology field, and the rest are general books. Boys Hostel:
Boys' homes have separate playing fields for volleyball, basketball, and badminton. Concerned staff look after the college's resources and make sure the hostel is always accessible. The youth hostel has a total of 25 rooms, all triple rooms, all are neat and clean. Our college not only provides a dedicated dormitory for girls but also provides them with special security guards who monitor the dormitory building every minute and hour under the supervision of the college. There are 17 rooms in the girls' dorm, all triple rooms, which are well-equipped, nicely furnished, neat, and clean. The hostel is fully under video surveillance. The girls' dormitories have facilities such as the Internet, a common room with TV and cable, an indoor playroom, and a reading room with a collection of national newspapers, magazines, etc.
