The College was affiliated with Calcutta University until Burdwan University was established on 16th June 1960. The College was included in 2(f) and 12(b) categories under UGC Act 1956 in the year 1959. The College enjoys Grant-in-Aid financial status under the Government of West Bengal.

The College accommodates thousands of first-generation learners from the economically backward section of the rural/ semi-rural population. The College tries to attract students from the minority community as far as possible. The College endeavors to inculcate communal harmony among the learners. The College achieved the status of an undergraduate College in 1959. The main campus comprises the Main Building, Science Building, B.Ed Building, Boys’ Common Room, Girls’ Common Room, Canteen, Administrative Building, and a Post Office. The second campus holds the Girls’ Hostel, Principal’s Quarter, and Teaching Staff quarters. On the third campus stands the Boys’ Hostel. The Sports Ground of the College forms the fourth campus of the College.

Infrastructure and Facilities

Library:

Katwa College was founded on 16th August 1948. The college library started its initial journey on 10th January 1949 with some donated books. Now at present, the College library has 3 wings. Central Library which mainly caters to the needs of Honours students (Science, Arts & Commerce), teachers & non-teaching staff of the College. Morning Library Caters to the needs of past students of the morning shift of Katwa College & B.ED library meets the demand of the B.ED department of Katwa College. Each library is headed by a librarian. The central library has more than 39,101 books.

Hostel Facilities:

The college has a wide hinterland has good hostel facilities for both male and female students. One boys' Hostel ( Katwa College Boys' Hostel) has a capacity of 85 boarders. The three-storeyed Girls' hostel ( MAITRAYEE) has a capacity of 52 boarders. Students are admitted to the hostel based on the distance of their residence from the hostel and their respective merit.

Boys Hostel:

The college has a wide hinterland has good hostel facilities for male students. One boys' Hostel (Katwa College Boys' Hostel) has a capacity of 100 borders. Students are admitted to the hostel based on the distance of their residence from the hostel and their respective merit.

Girls Hostel:

The college has a wide hinterland has good hostel facilities for female students. The three-storeyed Girls' hostel (MAITRAYEE) has a capacity of 80 borders. Students are admitted to the hostel based on the distance of their residence from the hostel and their respective merit.

Sports Complex:

The College has a separate sports ground for Annual Sports. Prizes and certificates are presented to all students acquiring the first three positions in each item. There is a sports ground adjacent to the Boys’ Hostel which serves the borders of the hostel. Another sports ground inside the quarter campus is used by the dwellers. Indoor games are held throughout the year. Competitions for the students are arranged in Carom, Table Tennis and Chess.

Admission

For BA(Honors) admission, candidates must have earned a 10+2 in the relevant Honors subject from a recognized institute.

For B.Ed admission, candidates must possess a valid bachelor's degree from an institute or board that is recognized.

The minimum requirement for admission to the B.Com (General) course is 10+2 from a recognized institute or board.

For B.Sc (Honors) admission eligibility, candidates must hold a 10+2 degree from an institute or board that is recognized.

Admission to all courses is based on merit.

The vision of the College gradually changed with time, especially in spreading literacy missions all over West Bengal. The College tries to attract students from the minority community as far as possible.

Exposing young minds to advanced scientific topics and imparting hands-on training with sophisticated analytical instruments. To establish the college as a potential center of research activities thus creating a strong tradition of deep-rooted academic culture and an ambiance that favors the scholarly activities of the faculty.
