Kharagpur College was founded on 29 August (Monday) 1949 on the premises of the Silver Jubilee School at Kharagpur, Puratan Bazar. soon, thereafter, the college obtained a gift of nearly 40 bighas of land from Mrs. Saleha Khatoon, wife of late Nasir Ali Khan of Panchberia, Kharagpur and the construction of the college building started under the dispersal scheme of the state Government on the 2nd day of July 1951. The functioning of the college then started in its own building at the present permanent site at Inda, Kharagpur.

Infrastructure and Facilities

Library:

he College boasts a big library with a large collection of Books on all the subjects taught. The stock is regularly replenished with new publications every year. There is a spacious reading room that can accommodate more than fifty readers at a time. The library has two sections – The general section and Seminar Library Section. Books are issued on production of library cards if the Library card is lost, Rs. 5/ – (five) is charged for the issue of a fresh card. Loss of a card is to be immediately reported to the Librarian. If the Library sustains the loss of books due to non–reporting or due to the negligence of students, the loss must be made good by the student concerned. Silence in the Library is imperative. Steps are ahead to computerize the full functions of the library including students' general access to the computerized catalog. Of late the seminar library system has been revived and is being controlled and managed by the faculties of the respective departments.

Cafeteria:

The college has a canteen facility for staff and students.

Playground:

The college has a big playground. All kinds of sports and NCC activities take part in the playground. Both boys and girls take part in sports. The players also undergo regular practice in the playground. Different kinds of tournaments and sports meets like Annual Athletic Meet are organized by the college.

Swimming Pool:

We have also constructed a swimming pool. It helps the students (both boys and girls) to practice swimming and go to swimming competitions. Students can swim here under the supervision of trainers.

Auditorium:

The college has an auditorium facility for events and seminars.

Sports Facilities:

Admission

Kharagpur College offers the B.A., B.Sc., and B.Com. courses in the general and honors stream at the UG level and Kharagpur College offers M.A. courses at the PG level.

Candidates can apply to all the courses at Kharagpur College offline, by obtaining the application form from the college office.

Candidates who have passed 10+2 are eligible to apply for the B.A., B.Sc., and B.Com general courses.

Candidates who have passed 10+2 with 45% marks in aggregate or 50% marks in the Honors subject / related subject are eligible to apply for the B.A., B.Sc., and B.Com Honors subjects.

Admission to all the UG courses at Kharagpur College will be done based on merit in the qualifying examination.

Candidates who have passed B.A. in Bengali are eligible to apply for the M.A. course.

M.A. course seats will be allotted based on scores obtained in a Common Admission Test, conducted by Vidyasagar University.
