In 1957, the Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE), Gwalior was declared a deemed university in 2018 as per section 12B of the UGC Act 1956. The institute was previously called Lakshmibai College of Physical Education (LCPE) receives funding through the Govt of India under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. In 1973, the institution was upgraded to an institute with National significance. The Institute was initially an affiliated with Vikram University, located in Ujjain prior to becoming an integral member of Jiwaji University in Gwalior in 1964.

The primary goal behind the creation of the institute was to improve the quality of physical education through the development of skilled instructors and instructors and. Three-year Bachelor of Physical Education (BPE) was created in the year 1957, along with the 2-year Master of Physical Education (MPE) in 1963.
