 The LNJN National Institute of Criminology and Forensic Science New Delhi was established by the Government of India in 1972 by the Bureau of Police Research and Development following recommendations of the University Grants Commission (UGC) to set up a Central Institute for teaching Criminology and Forensic Science. The UGC had earlier set up an Expert Committee to suggest steps to bring 'Criminology' and 'Forensic Science' into the general stream of university education, pursuant to resolutions taken at the UNESCO Symposium (London, 1955) that systematic understanding of Criminology and Forensic Science was necessary for Law Enforcement Officers and the Universities should be encouraged to include these disciplines in their curriculum.

The ICFS made a humble beginning in 1972 by organizing 2 training courses for senior officers of the Central Justice System. In 1976 it became an independent Department directly under the Ministry of Home Affairs with a wider mandate which included the promotion of Criminology and Forensic Science through a variety of means. Since 1972, the institute has made significant headway in training and research in applied aspects of these two subjects. over 34,000 officers from Police and Civil Administration, Prosecution, Judiciary, Correctional Administration, Customs, Defence Forces, and Forensic Science Laboratories have attended various orientation and specialized courses at the institute. Officers from foreign countries, namely Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Fiji, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Malaysia, Maldives, Sudan, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Palestine, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Uganda, and Zambia have also participated in some of these courses. The LNICFS, New Delhi Institute has undertaken several research projects in Criminology and Forensic Science and it operates several schemes for the promotion of Criminology and Forensic Science.

The College is approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), and accredited by Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University.

Courses Offered by the College a PG Diploma in Investigation of Cyber Crime and Law, Security Management, and Victimology and victim Assistance, MA in Criminology, and Forensic Sciences.

LNICFS, New Delhi Facilities and Infrastructure:

The teaching area is about 9000 square meters while the hostel space is 2400 square meters. The main building accommodates several lecture theatres, seminar rooms, and an auditorium. There are residential facilities for the faculty and staff an instrumentation wing and several laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment. 

Library:

The LNJN NICFS library has over 16000 volumes of books and subscribes to over 42 journals on social work, social anthropology, criminology, sociology, law, policy, science, forensics, chemistry, biology, physics, etc.

Scheme A LNJN NICFS Merit and Means Scholarship: This LNJN National Institute of Criminology and Forensic Science New Delhi scholarship is provided for professional and technical courses. It includes categories like scholarships for Top Class Education for students with disabilities. Financial assistance will be INR 2000 per month for 12 months in quarterly instalments. The scholarship will be approved only with the submission of a certificate of prescribed minimum attendance of 75% and a minimum of 60% marks.
