Maheshtala College – a Grants in Aid co-education college, affiliated to the University of Calcutta caters to three streams– Arts, Science & Commerce. There is a total of 15 academic departments out of which nine are in the Arts stream, five in the Science stream, and one in the Commerce stream, with Hons in 12 subjects.  A committed group of teachers – 26 full-time teachers (including the Principal),  25 State Aided College Teachers (SACT), and a Librarian are engaged in the dissemination of knowledge, using a wide plethora of teaching-learning techniques. The dedicated and focused group of 14 non-teaching staff (including 5 casual non-teaching staff) provide administrative and functional assistance to ensure the smooth functioning of the college. The dynamic and positive leadership of the Principal synchronizes all the diverse aspects – academic and administrative, to ensure that the stated objectives of the college are firmly adhered to, and carried forward in a relentless pursuit of progress.

Infrastructure and Facilities

The building of MC Kolkata is divided into three wings, one of which is two stories tall and the other three stories tall. These wings contain 25 classrooms.

Library:

A Library is a collection of various sources of information that is accessible to a defined community- students and teachers, for reading, reference, or borrowing. An ideal library contains books, periodicals, newspapers, e-books, and others. The first library consisted of archives of the earliest form of writing- the clay tablets. It serves a practical role in sharing e-resources, physical resources such as books, journals, periodicals, and newspapers etc. These contents of libraries help teaching and learning and are of immense benefit to teachers and students. The second role of the library is in preserving and organizing documents and ideas so that they are accessible for future learners. Thirdly, the library plays a vital role in the social and intellectual sphere by bringing together people and ideas, orienting them to newer paradigms, and enabling the present students to update themselves for the future.

This practical role of sharing resources between teachers and learners in the classroom motivates them to come forward in knowledge-sharing and transforming their nebulous ideas into reality and makes the Library one of the most important organs of the college.

Hostel:

There are separate common rooms for boys and girls. These common rooms are equipped for recreational activities. MC Kolkata has a Ladies' Hostel that was made possible by financial support from the UGC. There is a canteen where students may get healthy cuisine for a discounted price.

Sports Facilities:

The college has sports facilities for all students. Local Diamond Club has a playground behind Sudhir Chandra Bhandari Memorial Block. The college uses the ground for Annual sports, athletic meets, and outdoor games. There are also carom boards, chess, and other indoor games.

Cafeteria:

There is a Canteen offering healthy food at a subsidized rate to students, with a Drinking Water fountain. Students can also enjoy their tiffin at the cafeteria.
