Mahishadal Raj College is the third oldest college in the undivided district of Midnapore and the fiftieth one under the University of Calcutta. The college was founded on August 1, 1946, by Kumar Debaprasad Gagra Bahadur, the then “Raja” of Mahishadal and a celebrity in the field of music and fine arts. Now the College is affiliated with Vidyasagar University since 01.06.1985, vide letter no. 983-Edn (U) dt. 23.05.1985. It is situated only twenty kilometers from both Haldia (a potential Industrial Town of W. B.) and Tamluk (the District headquarters of Purba Medinipur). The College has immensely benefited from its location in a lush green and unspoiled countryside. The result is a pleasant, placid campus that is free from all baneful influences and unifies mofussil simplicity and urban refinement. The College was established at a period when Quit India Movement got its momentum at Mahishadal. Scores of lives were sacrificed here. The first National Government during British colonial rule was formed and headed by Sri Satish Chandra Samanta, the beloved son of Mahishadal. Gandhiji came here and stayed for five days and extended full support to the Patriotic Congressman who indulged in some violent attacks against the British Raj. Nirala (Surya Kanta Tripathi), the famous Hindi Poet got his schooling here.

Library:

Mahishadal Raj College Library was started along with the establishment of the College in the year 1946. This was the third oldest College of the undivided Midnapur District and now it is the second oldest College of the Purba Medinipur District. Since then, the College library is satisfying the huge demand of the poor as well as needy students. It is one of the best College Libraries regarding collection as well as providing services to the users of this semi-town locality.

Hostel Facilities:

The college runs two hostels–one for the boys and the other for the girls. They are well governed by the teacher superintendents. Admission is made strictly based on distance from the student’s residence. Priorities are given to Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, and handicapped students. No married student is allowed to stay in a hostel. Any unsuccessful candidate in any University Exam. will be given one more chance to overstay in the hostel. The rules and regulations laid down by the Hostel Committee are obligatory for the inmates of the hostel.

Canteen:

There is a cheap canteen in the college that caters food to the students at a subsidized rate.

Medical Facilities:

The college has established a “Medical and First Aid Centre” of its own which is regularly attended by a registered medical practitioner. He also attends to the inmates of the hostels. General medicine is provided free of cost to any student or staff falling ill during college hours.

Auditorium:

The college has a 450-seater Auditorium that will be available on the Ground Floor of the building for all the events and seminars.
