Madurai Institute of Social Sciences is a multi-faculty research centre affiliated the Madurai Kamaraj University. The college is the first of its result in South India to offer courses related to professional social work and Human Research Management. Madurai Institute of social sciences is a private autonomous Institute which was established on 2nd October 1969. It offers various level courses i.e. undergraduate, Postgraduate, Postgraduate Diploma, M.Phil and PhD in social work, Human research management, Computer application, Commerce, etc. Known for its courses related to professional social work and Human research management in South India. Now Madurai Institute of Social Sciences is a multi-faculty college and research Centre and was authorised with B ++ through NAAC in 2007 and finished its Autonomous reputation withinside the yr 2009. The college was Re-accredited with an ‘A’ Grade by NAAC in the year 2014 and got an extension of Autonomy in the year 2016. In the year 2019, in its third cycle, the College was Re-Accredited with a “B+” Grade. The college presently offers 4 Post Graduates, 8 Under Graduates, 3 Diplomas, and two M.Phil and Ph. D programmes. The college offers Diploma in Health Care under the UGC Community College scheme in the year 2014. Our Founder - Chairman is instrumental in the success of the college.

Dr. (Capt).DVP Raja -The Founder of Madurai Institute of Social Sciences had a visionary idea of setting up an Educational Institution in the Southern part of Tamil Nadu with a view to training young men and women in “Scientific Humanism”. With the assistance & cooperation of like-minded dignitaries like Sir P.T. Rajan, Mr M.B.S. Henry, Managing Director, Madura Coats, Prof. S.Ramanathan, Dr T.P. Meenakshi Sundaram (Former Vice Chancellor, Madura Kamaraj University), Dr Aram (Former Vice Chancellor of Gandhigram Rural University) and others, it was started in a small house at 21, Beasant Road, Chokkikulam, Madurai on 2nd October 1969 on the birth centenary of Gandhiji, the Father of our Nation with an enrolment of 4 students. Now the college has more than 1000 students housed in a large building on a beautiful campus, Alagarkoil Road, Madurai.

Facilities and Infrastructure

Library:

The library is equipped with 2472 reference books, and 18005 journals for its various programs offered by the institute. There are also e-journals, e-books and other digital resources available within the library. Library also has a collection of 439 educational CDs .The library offers circulation, current awareness, reference, Internet, Newspaper, Bibliography, and reprography services.

Hostel:

A separate hostel facility for boys and girls. The hostel provides various facilities for its students which include potable water, a mess facility, a recreation newspaper, a magazine, a tv for students, Wifi facility. The hostel rooms are twin-sharing rooms with individual cots or Individual rooms are also available.

Health awareness centre:

conducts various programs, and workshops to aware its students of the benefits of yoga, meditation etc which will aid the student to lead a better lifestyle that caters to the physical aspect and mental aspects of one’s life. 

Gym and yoga centre:

Are for students to implement the same aim to maintain a healthy lifestyle to strive in various aspects of life. The gym and yoga centre regularly conduct seminars, conferences, etc. The Yoga Centre includes a meditation centre, which conducts Raja yoga meditation etc. The yoga Centre offers yoga asanas and pranayama training in the morning and evening.

Canteen:

A canteen that provides hygiene and healthy food at affordable prices. The college has a philosophy of good hygienic food and exercise can prevent modern diseases like BP, etc.

Sports:

The college has both indoor and outdoor sports facilities. The indoor sports cum auditorium with a built-up area of 7576 sq. ft is utilized by the students to play badminton, volleyball, table tennis, carom, and chess. The college ground is also used for outdoor sports and games. The events like Shot-put, Handball, Kabaddi, Cricket, Ring ball, Kho–kho, etc are played outdoors. The students are provided with adequate support, on-duty leave, and travel allowance to participate in the sports and games events outside. The student representing the institution is given a pair of dresses and a sports kit.

Alumni Associations:

The Alumni Association of Madurai Institute of Social Sciences changed fashion in 1986. It meets once a year, which is on 2nd October, the foundation day of the college. The Alumni Association has chapters namely Madurai, Chennai, and Bangalore, The Alumni who work in various places come together and contribute to the development of the college by planning and participating in the Annual General Body meeting. Apart from this common meet, chapter-wise Alumni gathering takes place at respective areas.

Scholarships

Various scholarships are offered by the Madurai Institute of social sciences college based on scholarships provided under the central and state government i.e. SC/ST scholarship, SC/ST hostel scholarships, BC/MBC/DNC for district backward classes and minorities welfare scholarship, Farmer's scheme scholarship, Defence service scholarship, Minorities community scholarship, National merit scholarship, Rajiv Gandhi Memorial scholarship for SC/ST for M.Phil/Ph.D scholars. 

Admission

Admission to students at the Institute is based on merit and the application mode is online. Passed 10+2 with necessary subjects. Psychology, Information Technology and Computer Application.

Placement

The bureau meets twice a semester, plans activities that will improve the job readiness of the students and review the progress in achieving the same. It periodically interacts with prospective employers and Alumni to understand the trends in placement and also the expectations of the employer. 

Members of the alumni are invited to guide students in choosing a career, in assessing their skills and in helping them to understand the perspective of their employers. Life skills training are organized to strengthen the psycho-social skills of the students. Special sessions on group discussion, and facing interviews are also organized for the final year students.
