Municipal College took its birth under the auspices of REDS (Rourkela Educational Development Society ) in the year 1978 and within a span of 41 years, it has proved itself to be an institution of excellence.

The college has been accredited by NAAC in 2016 with a B + Grade (2nd Cycle) with a Grade Point of 2.67. It is in receipt of the World Bank Sponsored Institutional Development Grant (IDG) under the programme Odisha Higher Education Programme for Excellence and Equity (OHEPEE) of Govt. of Odisha, Department of Higher Education. It is also one of the leading colleges of Sambalpur University having established its academic credentials over the years in University Examinations consistently.

In NCC and Sports and Games it has excelled continuously producing number a of International Hockey players such as Peter Tirkey, Prabodh Tirkey, Ignace Tirkey and Lazarus Barla.

Initially established as an Intermediate College imparting Arts, Science and Commerce, later on, it developed into a Composite Degree College, in the year 1980. It is recognized by the U.G.C. under section 2(f) and 12B of its Act as an undergraduate college. At present, Honours teaching is imparted in 12 subjects besides Self-Financing Professional Courses B.B.A and M.Com.One of the major attractions of the Institution is the Spoken English Programme imparted free of cost.

The college strives its best to impart quality education and groom the learners inculcating practical skills and ethical values in them to become good human beings and responsible citizens of tomorrow.
