Muralidhar Girls' College was founded in 1919 as a girls' school with a small number of students. The founder was Sri Muralidhar Bandyopadhyay, Rector of Sanskrit College, a renowned scholar and educator whose dream was to inspire young women to embrace the ideals of the country's tradition and culture. Her dream later came true on July 8, 1940, when the school became Ballygunge Girls' College with renowned educator Sri Nalini Mohan Shastri as principal. In 1945 the college was permanently affiliated with the University of Calcutta and a year later renamed Muralidhar Girls' College in honour of its founder.
