In 1924 Narasinha Dutt College, one of the oldest colleges in the district of Howrah and one of the biggest in West Bengal came to be established in the residential building of late I.R. Belilious in a rather inconspicuous manner with only seven teachers and 124 students. The initiative in this regard was taken by the late Suranjan Dutta, the second son of the Late Narasinha Dutt. This institution of higher learning, affiliated with the University of Calcutta, had begun its journey with the late Professor Motilal Chatterjee as its first Principal and a renowned scholar late Prof. Jnanendranath Sen as the Vice-Principal.

Infrastructure and Facilities

Library:

The College Library of Narasinha Dutt College has a long history since 1924 when it was initiated in an old college building room number-1. At the initial stage, the library was enriched with a small number of books and other documents received from the personal collection... At the later stage, it was shifted to the 3rd floor of the West Building during 1976-77. At that time, the library collected some new books on its side. Then, during 1998-99. At last, finally, it was shifted to its present place i.e. 1st floor of the New Building.

Book Bank:

A  part of the library system of our college is the Students’ Book Bank which has books covering all the subjects in the curriculum. Besides this, individual departments have their seminar libraries for students and teachers.

Canteen:

We have a well-furnished canteen subsidized by the college to cater fresh and hygienic food to the students and teaching and non ­teaching staff of the college. The plastic cups and glasses used in the canteen and by the canteen personnel to serve tea and drinks to the faculties and staff of the college have been replaced by earthen wares.

Common Rooms:

Full-fledged gymnasium, carom board, football, volleyball, cricket bat ball. Table Tennis (not yet)

Far more spacious new Boys’ Common Room was constructed in 2009 and opened on the first floor of the bank building, and the college could thus meet a long-standing demand of the students.  There is also a ladies’ common room for the recreation of girl students.

Gym Facilities:

A gymnasium equipped with all the modern equipment is present on the first floor of the bank building.

Computer Lab:

A computer center has been set up with assistance from MPLAD fund in a separate building having a large number of computer terminals with internet connection. Besides this, the science departments have their individual desktop and laptop computers with internet connections and Wi-fi systems. The Department of Mathematics and the Department of Computer Science have their computer laboratories. The Department of Commerce has a computer-based IT Laboratory for students and teachers. The College office is almost fully automated with most of the services being computerised.

Admission

Narasinha Dutt College offers a BA (Hons), BA, B.Com. (Hons), B.Com, B.Sc. (Hons), and B.Sc. courses at the UG level.

Candidates can apply online to all the courses offered by Narasinha Dutt College by visiting the official website.

Candidates who have completed 10+2 in the relevant stream with minimum required marks are eligible to apply for BA, B.Com, and B.Sc courses.

Seats will be allotted based on a subject-wise merit list.

The merit list for admission to the UG courses will be published by the college, based on students’ performance in the 10+2 examination.

Students can apply for multiple courses in a single application form.
