Established in 1986, NIFT is the pioneering institute of fashion education in the country and has been in the vanguard of providing a professional human resource to the textile and apparel industry. It was made a statutory institute in 2006 by an Act of the Indian Parliament with the President of India as a ‘Visitor’ and has full-fledged campuses all across the country. Over the years NIFT has also been working as a knowledge service provider to the Union and State governments in the area of design development and positioning of handlooms and handicrafts.

Facilities and Infrastructure

NIFT Chennai is equipped with all necessary state-of-the-art infrastructure facilities for all the courses. Starting from the dedicated Material workshop, Machine room, and Computer lab for the common Foundation Programme to Pattern making & Garment construction (Sewing) Lab for various other departments, the center has a balanced setup.

Art rooms and classrooms for all the required courses are well set up. Specialized labs and workshops for Knit (Flat knitting, Circular knitting, Shima Seiki, etc.,) & Leather products and Lifestyle accessories add value. A well-structured Photography studio and a Mac lab as a graphic design studio are also part of NIFT Chennai.

To hold, organize, conduct, and perform various presentations and cultural activities, the campus has two auditoriums. Residential Accommodations:

The Institution provides facilities for hostel accommodation for both boys and girls. The hostels are spacious, safe, and secured with a cordial environment and surrounded by pleasant landscapes. A hygienic kitchen has been provided in each hostel with large dining halls. The rooms are well furnished. The college has ladies' hostels accommodating 1400 (one thousand four hundred) and above borders and boys' hostels with 2500 and above borders. Both the hostels have round-the-clock Wi-Fi connectivity and medical facility. Proper hygienic conditions and strict supervision are maintained throughout.

Medical Facilities:

A Doctor will be available at the NIFT Campus and Hostel during specific schedules. The facility of an in-house nurse will be available for the girls? hostel. First Aid Kit and General Medicines will be available with the warden. The resident students may also visit any OTHER doctor of their own choice after informing the hostel warden and the copy of the prescription/ doctor details to be submitted to the warden on the same day of availing the treatment.
