This institute was founded on April 1, 1976, when the JALMA Center of India was officially handed over to the government. India, then to the Indian Council for Medical Research. It was named the JALMA Central Institute of Leprosy in 1976 and was renamed the Jalma National Institute of Leprosy and Other Mycobacterial Diseases in 2005 to reflect its broader research areas.  This institute was originally founded in 1966 as the “JALMA Indian Center” and operated by the Tokyo-based volunteer organization– JALMA (Japanese Leprosy Mission for Asia).  This Institute is one of the finest examples of international human ties and mutual compassion. 

The institute celebrates its 37th anniversary in the CIMR. The Institute places a strong focus on leprosy (40%), the relevant areas of tuberculosis and other mycobacteriosis (40%), HIV (10%), filariasis, etc. (10%). During its existence as a research institute within the ICMR, the Institute's scientists continued to contribute to almost every aspect of leprosy, to several cutting-edge areas of tuberculosis (fingerprinting methods, genetics, drug resistance, etc. ), some areas of HIV-AIDS and are now related confronted with problems such as heartworm disease.
