Nirmala Niketan College of Home Science is a Christian minority educational institution. Administered by a society registered under the Societies Registration Act 1860 and the Public Trusts Act 1950 and by all who are members of the Congregation of the Daughters of the Heart of Mary in India. The society is governed by a board, whose official president is the Province of the Daughters of the Heart of Mary in India. Today, Nirmala Niketan College of Home Science is one of the pioneer institutions offering higher education for women in India. The College of Applied Sciences and the College of Domestic Science were born through the vision and prudence of the pioneering members of our society, Maria Paiva Couceiro, Colette Galby, and Dorothy Baker. Soon after India's independence, these women saw an important and active role for Indian women in society. In 1953,

Miss Pavia and Miss Colette Galby came to Mumbai and managed to get a flat in Gobind Mahal, Marine Drive. Soon after, a piece of land was purchased from New Marine Lines and construction began. Miss Galby, Founding Principal On November 21, 1955, began a one-year certificate course in Home Science with thirteen students and two teachers. Since then, the college has grown by leaps and bounds over the years and has become the University of Mumbai's three-year B.Sc. Post Graduate Course in Home Science, Two Year M.Sc. Degree studies in five different disciplines, Ph.D. Home Science course and several self-funded degree and certificate programs to add value.
