The North-Eastern Hill University Act (24 of 1973) passed by both Houses of Parliament received the assent of the President of India on May 26th, 1973. It was published in the Gazette of India (Extraordinary) on May 26th, 1973 together with the First Schedule of the Act incorporating the Statutes of the University.

The University was established following the passage of Act 24 of 1973. was passed by the Parliament. In its initial days was the sole functioning institution within North East India. But, due to the expansion of Mizoram University and Nagaland University, North Eastern Hill University lost its jurisdiction across the entire north. It operates only in Meghalaya but still has affiliations with the Institute of Science and Technology of Meghalaya.
The university is nearly forty years now, making it one of the longest-running Central university in India. North Eastern Hill University first began operations using rental spaces, but then was able to purchase two houses, one at Nongthymmai and one in Bijni. The University was operating from these locations until 2004. In 2005, the University slowly began moving to its own campus of 1225 acres in Umshing. Since then, the university has built on the Campus many research centers as well as state-of-the-art facilities.

Library
A constantly-changing library on the campus is aimed at giving all the books needed and keeping up with changes in studies and the sciences. Hostel
The total number of 23 hostels operate on the campus. Out of the 23 hostels 11 are reserved for women and twelve are devoted to males. All 23 hostels are staffed by professors and teachers who serve as wardens. Each hostel is home to a capacity of between 90 and 100 students. Some hostels accommodate up to as many fifty students.
Sports Department
North Eastern Hill University is not one to make sports a casual pastime. The University offers plenty of spaces for activities. Additionally, it has dedicated coaches for basketball and football. The North Eastern Hill University has many important cells, including Career counseling cell, anti-ragging and equal opportunities cells. Additionally, the university has established research centers such as the one located in its life science college with facilities and equipment such as DNA synthesizers and Confocal Microscope. NEHU also has facilities that are dedicated to members of the National Council of Science Museums and The Indian Council for Social Science Research as well as many other councils that are likely to be involved.
Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) scholarships are awarded to those candidates who have cleared NET and have obtained 55% marks in the Master’s degree. NEHU also awards postgraduate scholarships to those candidates who have passed Honors degrees with minimum 55% marks.
