The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) was established in November 1945 as a national-level apex advisory body with the aim of conducting a comprehensive survey of the available facilities for technical education and promoting development in a coordinated and integrated manner across the country. The AICTE Act was formulated to establish the council, intending to facilitate proper planning and coordinated development of the technical education system throughout India. Its objectives include promoting qualitative improvements in technical education alongside planned quantitative growth, as well as regulating and maintaining norms and standards within the technical education system and related matters.

The establishment of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University was initiated by the Government of Maharashtra under the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University Act, No. XXII of 1989, designating it as a Unitary University. However, in 2016, the Government of Maharashtra transitioned the University into an Affiliating Technological University through the enactment of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University Act, No. XXIX of 2014. With this transformation, the University's jurisdiction expanded to encompass the entire state of Maharashtra, currently affiliating 272 institutes with a total student enrollment of 136,534.
