Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science and Technology has its origin from Periyar Maniammai College of Technology for Women established in 1988, by the Periyar Maniammai Educational and Charitable Society, Chennai. The Periyar Maniammai College of Technology for Women, named after the great social reformer of the twentieth century, E.V.Ramasamy, popularly known as Thanthai Periyar and his philanthropic wife Annai Maniammaiar, has to its credit of being the first Women’s Engineering College in the world. Institutionalizing the lofty ideals of Periyar by paving the way for women’s emancipation through providing increased access to higher education in Science and Technology and encouraging their participation in Social, National and Global development were the primary objective of the Institution.

Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science & Technology (PMIST), an independent deemed university, provides courses in a wide subject. The school was initially founded as a college , but is now run as a coed institution that teaches students for higher education. The college currently offers degrees in the areas of Engineering, Science and Management Studies and Finance. The institute envisions itself as a major creator of this rural eco-system.

The institute operates campuses at Vallam, Thanjavur, Tiruchirapalli as well as Delhi. Its Vallam campus serves as the principal campus. The campus spans more than 216 acres. The campus is environmentally friendly and green and therefore produces zero waste. Infrastructure

Hostel

The institute also has separate hostels for men and ladies. In the outdoor areas the sports departments have facilities that include a track of 400m soccer field, a the cricket court, basketball court three volleyball courts one kho-kho court with six badminton courts and two courts for kabaddi.

Hospital: A fully-fledged hospital is accessible on campus. The hospital is equipped with 16 beds as well as an ambulance for emergencies. The hospital is not just accessible to staff and students but also to the local population.
