Located in the middle of the sports city Patiala, the Prof. G.S. Govt. College of Physical Education, to be hereinafter referred to as PGSGCPE, is spread over 25 acres of land and governed by the State Government of Punjab (Department of Education). It was established at Lahore (Pakistan) in 1940, after partition, it was shifted to Shimla (Taradevi) then in October 1952 to Ropar, and finally in 1958 to Patiala. One of the government-funded colleges, it is affiliated with Punjabi University, Patiala. 

Prof. Gursewak Singh Govt. College of Physical Education, Patiala (Pb.) NAAC Accredited B++ is a premier institute in northern India. It is the only govt. college of physical education in Punjab which offers all the courses in physical education. This college started its journey from Mountessary Park Lahore in 1940. To fulfill the requirement of physical education, a six-month course was started at Tara Devi. In 1952 the college was shifted to Ropar and finally, it was shifted at Patiala in 1958. In the year 2005, the college was renamed as Prof. Gursewak Singh Govt. College of Physical Education. Prof. Gursewak Singh was a great sportsperson, eminent educationist, and good administrator.

Prof. Gursewak Singh Govt. College of Physical Education  Library has a total collection of 17354 books and they are indexed, catalogs, and properly stacked. The library is fully computerized. Sports 

Prof. Gursewak Singh Govt. College of Physical Education  are more than 25 playgrounds as per NCTE norms multipurpose gym, a fitness center, and a special purpose hall along with required equipment, instruments, and furniture. The college has 400 meter Athletic Track, Badminton Court, Basket Ball, Fencing, Hand Ball, Hockey, Kabaddi, Kho Kho, Net Ball, Soft Ball, and Volley Ball grounds. The indoor facilities are available for Gymnastics, weight lifting, wrestling, table tennis, yoga, Judo, etc.
