The Rabindra Bharati University was established in 1962 to mark the birth centenary of the legendary poet Rabindranath Tagore.
Rabindra Bharati University was founded on May 8, 1962, under the Rabindra Bharati Act to mark the birth centenary of poet Rabindranath Tagore at his residential house in Kolkata for the advancement of learning and culture particularly in the branches of music, dance, and drama. Assent of the President of India to the Rabindra Bharati Act passed by the Legislature of West Bengal, was first published in the Calcutta Gazette, Extra Ordinary, on the 10th January, 1962. The poet Rabindranath Tagore was the first Indian as well as the first Asian recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Rabindra Bharati University offers Bachelor of Arts [B.A], Bachelor of Arts [B.A] {Hons.}, Bachelor of Education [B.Ed], Bachelor of Fine Arts [B.F.A], Bachelor of Library and Information Science [B.Lib.I.Sc], Doctor of Literature [D.Litt], Master of Arts [M.A], Master of Fine Arts [MFA], Master of Library and Information Science [M.Lib.I.Sc], Master of Philosophy [M.Phil], Master of Social Work [MSW].
Hostel:
The University has five student hostels at present, two for the boys (one for SC/ST boys), and three for the girls. Construction work for another boys’ hostel is in progress. The total intake capacity in the boy’s hostel is 145 and the girl’s hostels can accommodate 50 boarders. Nevertheless, the university does not guarantee hostel accommodation for every outstation student.
Library:
Rabindra Bharati University Library system consists of the Central Library, Sangeet Bhavan Library, and departmental libraries attached to academic departments.
Health Care Centre:
Medical Unit was opened at Emerald Bower Campus on 17.02.2000 to give good medical services to the students, teachers, and non-teaching staff.
NSS:
In the NSS camp program, the student volunteers are actively involved in various activities such as the plantation of saplings; campus cleaning, and anti-pollution campaigns in and around the University campus. They are also involved in the mass literacy (Sarba-Siksha Abhijan) campaign among the poor people of neighboring localities. Awakening the health and social awareness program is another area of NSS performance.
Bank Facility:
A branch of the State Bank of India is available at the university campus.
Faculty:
The University has highly qualified and experienced faculty members. They are the most distinguished scholars, who constantly do research in their respective fields. The institute has a team of highly qualified faculty members, the majority of them have long teaching experience and are associated with the institution for many years.
Scholarship:
Rabindra Bharti University provides scholarships based on merit-cum-need, the university has a broad range of programs to provide financial assistance to students. The following fellowships/ scholarships are being run with the support of the State and Central Government.
Placements:
Placements are offered to deserving candidates at RBU. The University has also collaborated with several organizations to help the students in a better way. The top recruiters of RBU are TCS and Cognizant.
Rabindra Bharati University was set up with a view to disseminate Tagore's thoughts on education. The academic programmes thus, reflect the vision of Tagore in its mission to propagate Tagorean culture and its contemporary relevance through the curricular aspects in the Faculties of Arts, Fine Arts and Visual Arts. The course Tagore Studies/ Rabindra Charcha is a compulsory course in the undergraduate curriculum.
The University through its academic programmes commits itself to the service of the nation in the context of plurality of religions and diversity of cultures without taking into any consideration the distinctions across caste, gender, class and locale.
