It is well known that Swami Vivekananda (Swamiji) had long considered character to be the hallmark of an educated person. He emphasized times without number that education is not the “amount of information that is put into your brain” but the “life-building, man-making, character-making assimilation of ideas.” In 1939, the Governing Body of the Ramakrishna Mission took a small step towards actualizing this vision of education by starting an institution of higher education near Belur Math called Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira. The name ‘Vidyamandira’ is Swamiji’s own christening of the educational institution he wanted near Belur Math. A couple of decades later, during Swami Vivekananda’s birth centenary year (1963), the authorities of the Ramakrishna Mission submitted a proposal to the Government for the starting of the Vivekananda University. For various reasons, however, the university did not materialize at that time. Efforts in this direction were made off and on in subsequent years until finally, a deemed university under University Grants Commission (UGC) was established under Ramakrishna Mission’s auspices in 2005. The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, declared the Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute (RKMVERI) under the aegis of Ramakrishna Mission, as an Institution deemed-to-be university under Section 3 of UGC Act, 1956. The Institute was subsequently renamed ‘Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University’ with the approval of UGC, but reverted to its initial name RKMVERI in 2017 upon a directive from the UGC.
The university was established in 2005 and has accomplished many achievements. Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute (Vivekananda University) is the result of a desire from Swami Vivekananda. Swami Ji's desire was to establish the university should be established at Belur in Westbaengal there should be a university be created that dealt with the two fields of Indian Heritage and Modern Studies and, thus, harmonize one with the other. Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute (Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University) is one of the elite institutes which proudly boast NAAC A++ marks. The institution attracts bright minds and operates following the Swamiji's theories.
Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute Appropriated by University Grants Commission (UGC) and assessed by NAAC.
The institute has a total of six diverse schools with departments offering courses in various areas of study. The school and information about the courses are below.
The School of Indian Heritage: Under this school, there is a Department of Sanskrit and Philosophy that offers courses such as an integrated MA, M.Phil, and Ph.D.
Schools of Mathematical Sciences: Three Departments including departments of Computer Science (CS), Physics, and Mathematics provide courses at both Masters and Doctoral degree courses.
The School of Agriculture and Rural Development The school comprises 3 faculties , which supervise the research and development.
Schools of Rehabilitation Sciences and Physical Education The school is comprised of three departments. Two are located of which are located on the Coimbatore campus and another located on Belur Campus. Belur Campus. The school's primary focus is helping people with disabilities.
The School for Environment and Disaster Management: The schools are comprised of classes which study man-made as well as natural catastrophes.
Schools of Biological Sciences: the school is currently in the process of forming and hopes to confer doctoral degrees. Ph.D. within the same area of study.
The institute offers a range of courses at it's Belur, Coimbatore, Ranchi as well as Narendrapur Campus. Adittioonaly the institute also provides courses in certificates. The courses offered on all campuses are listed below.
Level UG: BA B.Ed, B.Sc Physics Integral Bachelors Programs
Level PG: M.Sc on yoga Integrated MA in Sanskrit, M.Sc in Mathematics or Physics and so on.
Ph.D. in CS, Ph.D., in Physics, Ph.D. in Biotechnology and Agriculture, etc.
Infrastructure
Each Department has its own building blocks, and has its own infrastructures.
The Department of Computer Science has four classrooms, one seminar Hall as well as an air-conditioned meeting room. Two labs in the department house 35 computer systems. However, the labs aren't exclusive only to CS department, but are accessible to other departments as well.
The total built-up space of the library's central area is 9680 square feet. It is home to 1364 books on computer science. The library utilizes KOHO to catalog its books. The library is fully automated and an internet connection is also accessible. In addition, 100 square meters of preservation space is being planned as a component of the library. This will house the documents associated with Swami Vivekananda as well as Ramkrishna.
Department of Physics includes four classrooms, one seminar room as well as a meeting room. A laboratory that has functions that are related to research as well as experiments are accessible within the department.
In addition the institution also has the facilities to play sports for students, too. In addition, it has an exercise facility.
Candidates who want to apply for the Integrated MA program must have completed Class 10 at an approved board with an average of at least 70% marks in addition to Class 11.
Acceptance into Integrated MA and M.Sc. is based on the scores obtained from the Written Test conducted by the university. It will be followed by counseling.
For the M.Sc program students must have an undergraduate degree in the relevant discipline from a reputable university, with at minimum 60 percent marks.
Students who wish to be admitted to the Integrated M.Phil as well as Ph.D program must have an minimum of 60 percentage points in Sanskrit in the Bachelor Degree with Honours and at least 60 percent marks in the relevant area of study in the Master's Degree degree from an UGC accredited university.
In order to be eligible for an integrated M.Phil or Ph.D degree for the field of Sports Sciences, students must possess a Master's degree from a relevant field with an average of at least 55 percentage marks.
Admission to integrated M.Phil and Ph.D. will be done by a score attained in UGC NETJRF and followed by an interview.
To be eligible for the Certificate course students must have completed Class 10 at an accredited board.
The admission to the Certificate will be based on Vocal Test and Interview.
Candidates who want to pursue PG Diploma with Yoga must have an undergraduate degree in the relevant field from a recognized university , with at minimum 50% marks.
Acceptance for PG Diploma will be done by a test of the performance in the Written Test of English as well as Interview , and Fitness Test.
To be eligible for Ph.D., candidate must be able to complete an M.Sc. degree, with a minimum of 60 percent marks.
Acceptance to Ph.D. is made by way of UGC NET/ CSIR NET Junior Research Fellowship. This will be followed by an interview.
