The independence of India in 1947 was coupled with the tragic partition of Bengal. Thousands of rootless people swarmed into West Bengal to start life new. Nadia is one of such districts, which accommodated a large section of these displaced persons. Ranaghat along with other principal towns of Nadia had to provide shelter to most of the refugees. In such a situation, a few educationists dreamt of disseminating the fruits of higher education among the people of the surrounding areas. It was thus that Ranaghat College made its humble beginning in a small room of Pal Chowdhury High School, Ranaghat, Nadia, in 1950 with affiliation to Calcutta University. Later it was shifted to its present premises by the side of National Highway 34. The College, located on a land of 4.68 acres, is well connected by road and railways and ever since its inception it has been instrumental in serving students from all sections of society irrespective of caste, creed, and religion presently affiliated to the University of Kalyani, Ranaghat college offers three undergraduate programs leading to B.A, B.Sc and B.Com degrees with Honours, Major and General courses. Ranaghat College also offers regular Master's Courses in Bengali under the University of Kalyani, DODL under the University of Kalyani in Bengali, English, History, and education from the year 2014. Ranaghat College is operating a regular study center of IGNOU, The Central University with U.G, P.G, Certificate, and Diploma Courses.

Infrastructure and Facilities at Ranaghat College

The Commerce Department laboratory is well-furnished with an adequate number of computers. Qualified faculties with the active support of the departmental teacher impart computer training. Besides, practical guidance is offered for office work. The Physics Department boasts of having laboratories for electronics, thermal experiments, and light experiments A dark room and a general laboratory are also there for the advantage of students. All these laboratories are equipped with sophisticated instruments.

The Department of Chemistry has four well-equipped laboratories. These laboratories are earmarked: one for Physical Chemistry with sophisticated instruments and computers; one for Inorganic Chemistry with chemicals and reagents, for semi-micro qualitative and quantitative analyses; one for Organic Chemistry with modern apparatus for synthesis; and another for preparation of samples and solutions. The Zoology department has an extremely sophisticated instrument room, two well-lit laboratories for the dissection of animals, one general laboratory, and a room for keeping animals. A Zoological garden will be introduced in the future. The Department of Botany has two well-equipped laboratories earmarked with Plant Physiology & Biochemistry Laboratory and General Laboratory. It also possesses a culture room wherein some locally available soil microflora is cultured. “Unmilata” is the rooftop medicinal plant garden maintained by this department.

A Central Computer lab is there for Math/Physics. The laboratory of the Geography Department is well furnished with instruments required for survey and mapping. There are geological stones and maps as well. The Central Computer Laboratory is used by students of Science departments.

The English Language Laboratory of the Department of English has audio-visual aids to enrich the departmental students. They not only avail the opportunity of getting acquainted with different classic films (in video format) and plays and poems (in audio format) but also of developing proficiency in the English language. The Laboratory is also equipped in teaching various nuances of phonetics.

Common Room:

There are separate large common rooms for boys and girls for their entertainment with facilities like carom and table tennis.

Canteen:

A spacious Students' Canteen has been newly constructed that caters to tea, snacks, and food to students at an affordable price. It remains open only during college hours.

Health Facilities:

Students of the College come under the scheme of the Universal Membership of the Students' Health Home. The College also organizes regular Health Check-up camps for students with the help of visiting doctors.

Sporting Facilities:

The College has a well-maintained playground inside the premises. The Sports Committee is responsible for organizing annual sports, regular football & cricket matches, and other outdoor games for preparing students to participate in Inter-College Competition at the University as well as state level.

Admission at Ranaghat College

A candidate may be admitted to the first semester of a three-year(Six Semester) B.A./ B.Sc./ B.Com.(Honours & Programme/General) Courses of Studies on passing Higher Secondary (10+2) Examination in General conducted by the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education or an equivalent examination conducted by another State Board/Council, The W.B. Council of Rabindra Open Schooling, or The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) recognized by the Distant Education Bureau(DEB) subject to fulfillment of the conditions mentioned below:

In the case of other Boards/Councils, a candidate shall have to pass five recognized subjects, of which one shall be English, of full marks not being less than 100 each. A candidate passing four subjects shall not be eligible for admission.

However, Candidates passing the Higher Secondary examination from the vocational stream conducted by the West Bengal State Council of Technical & Vocational Education & Skill Development (WBSCTVE&SD) or any other equivalent Board/Council are eligible for admission only in Programme/General courses(and not in Honours Courses) provided that the candidate must have passed in 5 (five) recognized subjects, of which one shall be English, in the previous qualifying examination.

Candidates shall be allowed for admission within 03 (three) consecutive academic sessions including the year of passing the previous qualifying examination. (For example, candidates passing H.S. Examination in the year 2018 will get the last chance of admission in the academic session 2020-2021.)

A candidate taking up Honours Course in a subject must have obtained:

A minimum of 45% marks in aggregate and 55% marks in the subject or the related subject at the previous qualifying examination.

or 50% marks in aggregate and 45% marks in the subject or related subject at the previous qualifying examination.
