Rani Birla Girls' College was founded in July 1961 by the Hindustan Charity Trust in memory of Rani Jogeshwari Devi Birla as the undergraduate art college of Calcutta University in an enlightened, liberal, and progressive environment. This college underwent a remarkable transformation, evolving from its original administrative apparatus (through a private foundation) into a supported institution under West Bengal rule. 

The Institute has a unique teaching and learning tradition spanning more than six decades and a relentless pursuit of excellence. This university has always achieved good academic results. Extracurricular education and values orientation were prioritized in the institutional curriculum. The college is very conveniently located on Shakespeare Sarani and is easily accessible from the junction of AJC Bose Road and Jawaharlal Nehru Road at Shakespeare Sarani. It borders Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad and Macpherson Square.
