The Medical College became set up as a joint mission of the North Eastern States. On September 14, 1972, the call of the College became modified to Regional Medical College, Imphal. The College became later renamed North Eastern Regional Medical College under the control of the North Eastern Regional Medical College Society. From August 1976, it became run beneath neath the Ministry of Home, Government of India, and became the handiest clinical university-run via way of means of the Ministry of Home.
Nearly 19 years later, the College became once more renamed as Regional Institute of Medical Sciences and its control became taken over via way of means of NEC, Ministry of DoNER, Government of India from April 1, 1995. After precisely 12 years, on the ancient day of April 1, 2007, the Institute became transferred to the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India.
The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) was approved by MCI. RIMS was ranked 43rd among the medical sections in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2021.
Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) courses are offered at various levels like Medical Degree (i.e Doctorate of Medicine (MD) Anesthesia, Master of Surgery [MS] (ENT), Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), etc.) and Doctoral levels and many more. The candidates seeking admission in MBBS, BDS, MD, and MS courses, must have to appear in an entrance exam, popularly known as National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET), as per the norm of the supreme court. The candidates are selected on the basis of marks obtained in NEET.
