Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai are twin towns. The towns are divided by the Thamirabarani River. Both towns have been important places for education since the British period. Tirunelveli district has many Muslim people. This led to the need for a college for higher education. Muslim leaders worked hard to start a college in 1971. The college is named after the famous Arabic scholar Sadakathullah Appa. The college's motto is "My Lord, Vouchsafe Me Wisdom".

The Sadakathullah Appa College is on a large 40-acre campus. It is run by the Sadakathullah Appa Educational Society. The college was first part of Madurai Kamaraj University for 20 years. In 1990, it became part of the new Manonmaniam Sundaranar University. In 1997, the college became co-educational, allowing both male and female students.
