Sankardev College an institution was established on the 2nd of September, 1962, and affiliated to Gauhati University. It was initially instituted as an evening College, but within a year of its inception, following an increase in the enrolment of students, the day shift was introduced. In 1972, with the creation of the State of Meghalaya and the establishment of a Central University in the State, the College was affiliated with the North Eastern Hill University, Shillong.

Sankardev College is Recognised by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC)and affiliated with NEHU(North Eastern Hill University).

The Sankardev College has a sprawling campus that is well-maintained and provides a serene environment for learning. The buildings are modern and equipped with state-of-the-art technology, Sankardev College makes it easier for students to learn and faculty to teach. The classrooms of Sankardev College, lecture halls, and labs are spacious, comfortable, and designed to provide an excellent learning experience. The library is also outstanding, with a vast collection of books, online resources, and knowledgeable librarians.

The College also provides hostel facilities for girl students and the Women’s Hostel was established in the year 2014. This has greatly served the needs of outstation students who can now avail of a safe, clean, and healthy homestay environment.

Sankardev College Library has been instated since its inception of the College in 1962. The Central library has been a great source of knowledge for the students and staff of the College. It caters to the needs of the users and its library housekeeping activities are fully automated with the Library Management Software. The motto of the library is “SAVE THE TIME AND TO CATER THE INFORMATION NEEDS OF THE USER” as mentioned in the “Five Laws of Library Science”. The Library takes the initiative to upgrade from time to time with the technology change.
