The Synthetic & Art Silk Mills' Research Association (SASMIRA) was established on 12th January 1950 under Registration No. 2505 of 1949-1950 granted under Societies Act XXI of 1860 and is a cooperative venture set up by The man-made fabric enterprise of India after independence as a multi-practical institute to serve its clinical and technological needs.

At that period the pioneers of the silk and art silk industry, composed of a large number of small units with a rare foresight mooted the proposal for creating a cooperative research organization. This thought was supported by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and different Government agencies that culminated in the status quo of SASMIRA, in advance called Silk and Art Silk Mills’ Research Association.

SASMIRA entered into its golden jubilee in the year 2000 AD, coinciding with the new millennium. The landmark building of SASMIRA at Worli is in the heart of the city of Mumbai, the imposing building covering nearly 12,000 sq. mts. Of region turned into conceived as a way lower back as in 1950, and finished in 1958.

SASMIRA is engaged in multifarious activities with the prime objective of rendering scientific & technical assistance to the textile industry, thereby assisting its growth and development. These activities include research and development, technical services and testing, instrumentation, technical education, dissemination of technical information, and organizing seminars and conferences.

SASMIRA Facilities and Infrastructure

Sasmira's reference library boasts an impressive collection of 23,806 general materials, including fabric books and periodicals, catering to the diverse needs of researchers, academicians, technologists, scientists, students, and textile industry professionals. Recognized as Asia's primary library in synthetic fiber and fabric, it houses bound periodicals and documents covering various textile-related subjects such as textile management, retailing, fashion, merchandising, and marketing.

Instrumentation:

As part of its R&D initiative focused on import substitution, Sasmira develops textile testing instruments adhering to international standards like British Standards, AATCC, and Bureau of Indian Standards. Its instruments have been widely adopted by textile units and research bodies across India and neighboring countries, earning Samira several awards for her contributions to the field.

Testing & Technical Laboratories:

Sasmira's testing facilities play a crucial role in conducting physical and chemical analyses of textile and allied products for textile manufacturers, import-export houses, government agencies, R&D institutes, and academic institutions. The laboratories are continuously upgraded to meet evolving challenges, particularly in the realm of Technical Textiles, with modern equipment and sophisticated analytical instruments facilitating applied research, investigations, and testing of various textile materials, dyes, auxiliaries, and chemicals. 

SASMIRA Admission

Admission at SASMIRA is conducted through either entrance-based or merit-based processes. Prospective applicants can apply online by completing the application form on the official website. Additionally, candidates are required to register on the DTE, Maharashtra website for counseling purposes.

For postgraduate programs, applicants must hold a minimum of 50% aggregate marks in their undergraduate degree. They also need to provide scores from recognized entrance exams such as CMAT, MH-CET, MAT, ATMA, XAT, or JMET as part of the admission requirements.
