One of the oldest law schools in India, School of Legal Studies (SLS) was established in the year 1962 as a part of Kerala University offering post graduate courses and research in law under the leadership and guidance of the late Prof.(Dr.)A.T.Markose, an internationally acclaimed jurist and academician.The Law School joined the folds of University of Cochin, in the year 1971, which was later reorganized and renamed as Cochin University of Science and Technology in 1986 for the promotion of graduate, post graduate studies and advanced research in various fields. Over the decades, since its inception, the Law School has blossomed into one of the top institutions among law schools engaged in teaching and research in India. SLS has made valuable contributions to the study and research of law in the past 54 years, fully living up to the motto of CUSAT, ‘Tejaswinavadhitamastu’ meaning ‘may the wisdom accrued deify us both-the teacher and the taught and percolate to the universe’ in its totality.

The Continuing dedication and scholarship at the School of Legal Studies attracted the attention of the Government of India, U.G.C. and the Government of Kerala. In recognition of the School’s competence to do quality research, University Grants Commission (UGC) granted the Special Assistance Programme (SAP) on “Corporate Governance and Securities Law” to it in 2011. On the successful completion of the first phase, UGC sanctioned the second phase of UGC SAP program for a further period of five years from 2018. In the second phase the School focuses on research in thrust areas such as corporate governance, corporate finance, corporate insolvency and bankruptcy, and mergers & acquisitions.In 2012, the Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer Chair on Human Rights was sanctioned and instituted by the Government of Kerala in the School of Legal Studies, in honor of the Late Justice V. R. Krishna Iyer, the ardent champion of Human Rights who through his various landmark judgments has espoused the cause of Human Rights. Further in 2020, Prof (Dr.) N. R. Madhava Menon Interdisciplinary Centrefor Research Ethics and Protocols (ICREP) is started under the aegis of School of Legal Studies with the financial support of the Government of Kerala. Named after the great Indian legal Educationist late Padma Shri. Prof. (Dr.) N. R. Madhava Menon, the Centre is engaged in inculcating the need for adherence to ethical and legal conduct of both scientific research and nonscientific research.
