The Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences was established under the State Legislature Act in 1983 and is named after Sanjay Gandhi. It was established by the state of Uttar Pradesh as a center of excellence to provide world-class medical care, education, and research. The institute is located on 550 acres (2. 2 square kilometers) campus at Raebareli Road, 15 km from the capital. Lucknow is located about 500 km east of New Delhi and is the capital of Uttar Pradesh. Lucknow is famous for its Nawabi culture, Mughlai cuisine, and intricate work of chikan, a form of fine embroidery.

Separate boys and girls hostels with high security are available on the university campus. Boys and girls have two hostels with WiFi services for UG and PG, which can accommodate about 450 students each with good infrastructure. The library subscribes to over 143 printed periodicals. The library also has 1,531 bound volumes of periodicals. Audiovisual educational programs and video lessons often take place in the library.
