The Shri Guru Ram Rai Institute of Medicine and Health Sciences in Dehradun was led to success by the incumbent Sajjad Nashin Sri Mahant Devendra Das Ji, the successor to the supreme seat of the Udaseen sect.  He consecrated this institution in the name of Sri Guru Ram Rai ji Maharaj, the eldest son of the seventh Sikh Guru, Sri Har Raiji. Shri Guru Ram Rai Ji established his DERA in the Doon Valley which later became known as DEHRA. Therefore, Dehradun owes its name and history to the appearance of "Dera" Sri Guru Ram Raiji in 1676 in the region now called Dehradun.
