The college was founded way back in 1964 in Shyampur village of Howrah district some 75 km away from Kolkata in the close vicinity of Gadiara – a well-known tourist spot of southern West Bengal. The genesis of the college was modest, as it offered general stream courses in humanities; science, and commerce, but consolidating on the foundation of vision for growth, the curriculum bouquet soon started enriching itself to impart honors curriculum in many of the subjects and today the college has 21 departments of which 14 departments impart honors curriculum.

Infrastructure and Facilities

Library:

The college has a library facility for all students. Students are allowed to the library only on the production of their authorized/valid Identity Cards.

Sports:

The supervising Head of the faculty of Physical education oversees the sports and games of the college in association with the sports sub-committee of the college. As per requirement, sports equipment is procured. Various essential playing kits are provided to the players from the college found in addition to arrangements for nutritious food, during practice sessions. The college has a big playground, a well-equipped multi-gym, and a well-stocked department of physical education reserve.

I.T Infrastructure:

Four computer labs have been set up with the help of RUSA found and some college aid Computer Science and Commerce, Mathematics, and Teachers’ Computer labs have been established. All these computers, along with those in various other departments, libraries, and offices have been upgraded and protected by anti-virus. Two projectors and laptops are utilized rotationally. The digital classroom has an installed provision for projections and other necessities.

Cafeteria:

The college has a canteen facility for staff and students.

Laboratories:

The head of the department of various subjects having laboratories within their fold maintains an exclusive register of different instruments purchased and added to the laboratory from time to time. Malfunctioning instruments are maintained/repaired either by the departmental staff or by outside technicians as required or needed. Some new instruments have been purchased in all the laboratories to cope with the CBCS which has been initiated in the academic session 2018-19.

Admission

SSM offers a BA, B.Com, and B.Sc. These courses have 12, 1, and 9 specializations respectively, under the UG level. Candidates who have cleared higher secondary examinations can apply to UG courses. 

At the PG level, the institute offers Bengali, English, Political Science, History, Commerce, Applied Mathematics & Environmental Studies as a distance education program for 2 years. 

Admission to all the courses is solely based on merit. For registration, candidates can apply either online or offline. The application forms are available on the institute’s official website.
